A letter from the Parents Association president

Susan Beck BatesHello! The Parents Association Advisory Board welcomes you and your student—or students—to the University of Iowa family. Whether your son or daughter is beginning his or her first semester or is a returning student, it's great to be a Hawkeye!

No doubt you and your student have been adjusting during the past few weeks. Please take advantage of this opportunity to keep the lines of communication open. One of the best—but also most difficult—jobs we have as parents is to lend an ear. Check-in with your students, and also give them the opportunity to grow during these first months.

By sending your children to The University of Iowa, you have made a wonderful investment. The Parents Association works toward the goal of making sure each student has a rewarding and successful college career at Iowa. Parents Association efforts include:

  • co-sponsorship of Welcome Back and Family Weekend events;
  • the Parent Fund for Student Support at the UI Foundation, which supports initiatives such Code Blue emergency phones across the campus, and furnishing the Admission Visitors Center and the Campus Recreation Wellness Center's wellness suite;
  • support of AlcoholEdu, an alcohol-education course required of all first-year students.

Family Weekend is a wonderful tradition at The University of Iowa. This year's event (held November 11 to 13) includes the Gameday Breakfast, a magic show, a Sunday Dance Marathon Brunch, and other activities. Please join us! For more information, or to register, visit (Registration deadline is October 28.)

Please visit us online at or contact our on-campus liaison, Belinda Marner at 319-335-3557 or Let us know how we can help you and your student. On, Iowa! Go, Hawks!
