A letter from the Parents Association president

Susan Beck BatesA warm welcome to each of you from the Parents Association Advisory Board.

Enjoy the beauty of spring wherever you are as you read this publication, and please take the time to walk around the University of Iowa campus during your next visit. What a beautiful campus it is: a meandering river, green grass, blossoming trees, and students enjoying the fresh air. Nirvana!

With spring comes graduation celebrations and commencement ceremonies. We congratulate graduating seniors and all the families and friends who have supported their academic efforts. The future is yours!

This issue of Parent Times highlights the university’s social media efforts, including a new Facebook page especially for parents of UI students. You’ll also find details about an exciting renovation in the works at the Main Library, unique study abroad opportunities for students, and a program that aims to spread healthful habits on campus.

Of particular interest to our parent board are safety initiatives. This issue includes a story about one popular program at Iowa, Red Watch Band, which focuses on preventing death from alcohol overdose.

Parents, take time to talk with your students about safety issues. Would your student know what to do if he or she encountered a safety issue, whether it’s an Internet threat or a physical threat on campus? And if your student called you for help in the middle of the night, would you have the necessary information or phone numbers? (See UI Safety and Respect site.)

Be sure to mark the weekend of Nov. 9–11 on your calendar for the next Family Weekend. It’s always filled with enjoyable activities, most notably, Hawkeye football. Make it a memorable weekend with your student.

We wish all the members of the Hawkeye family a happy and healthful summer.

On, Iowa! Go, Hawks!
