Move-in schedule

Their bags are packed, they're ready to go…

Get the scoop on our new move-in schedule for first-year students

Student with tiger hawk backpackWhat do you get when 4,600 students and their families try to move in to the residence halls all at once?

With any luck, neither we nor you will ever have to know.

In order to make move-in as painless as possible, University Housing & Dining is assigning a move-in time and date to all first-year students. By now, your student should have received his or her room and move-in assignment by e-mail. If not—or if that assignment got misplaced—contact University Housing & Dining contracts and assignments staff at 319-335-3000.

Students who are living in odd-numbered rooms will move in on Wednesday, Aug. 17. Students who are living in even-numbered rooms will move in on Thursday, Aug. 18. Students also have been assigned a time period for their move-in: morning (8 a.m.–noon), afternoon (noon–4 p.m.), or evening (4–8 p.m.).

Students must bring their Iowa One Card (their official UI student ID) and their building entrance proximity (prox) card to the residence hall. These cards were issued at Orientation. If your student did not attend Orientation (or lost one or both cards), they should go to the Iowa One Card Center at 3 Jessup Hall before arriving at the residence hall. The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 17 and Thursday, Aug. 18.

During move-in, traffic personnel will instruct you where to go as you approach the halls. Follow their directions to the unloading zones, unload your student’s belongings, then follow their instructions to a designated parking area away from the halls. Free shuttles will make continuous loops between the residence halls and the parking areas.

We know moving your son or daughter into a new home can be stressful. Please be patient. A move-in crew will be available to help.

Students wishing to move in before their assigned day may do so on Monday, Aug. 15 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Students moving in on this day will be charged a $30-per-night fee until their assigned move-in day. Students moving in on Monday do not need to do anything other than report to their building desk that day.

Returning student move-in is Saturday, Aug. 20, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Any student needing an accommodation to this schedule should e-mail a request to University Housing & Dining Office of Residence Life at Please include the student’s name, room number, and reason for request.
