A letter from the Parents Association president
Happy New Year from the UI Parents Association Advisory Board.
Iowa provides students with a top-notch education and experiences that go far beyond the classroom walls. Those experiences include opportunities for internships, jobs, and volunteer work, as well as exposure to new ways of thinking. It’s cliché, but our students must not only think out of the box, they need to see a whole new box.
This issue of Parent Times features the School of Journalism’s Advanced Reporting and Writing class, which focused on caucus campaign coverage during the fall semester. One of our sons took the class and learned so much about being a bulldog reporter (my word, not his) and going the extra mile on the campaign front. It truly is an example of a unique class with unique professors providing another opportunity for students to sharpen their skills.
January and February are traditionally the time to make and confirm living arrangements for the next school year. Students can reapply to live in residence halls in February. For information about off-campus housing, visit offcampushousing.uiowa.edu. Mid-year also is a good time for an academic assessment with your student. It’s helpful for parents and students to talk about the next phase of your student’s academic career.
If you touch base with your student in Iowa City this winter, keep in mind that there are many events to enjoy on campus, such as Dance Marathon, basketball games, and various cultural and arts programs, just to name a few. Check www.uiowa.edu for event updates and locations.
And in the spirit of being prepared, the dates for Family Weekend 2012 have been announced: Nov. 10–12. Make those hotel reservations now!
Best regards to each of you.
On, Iowa! Go, Hawks!
