A letter from the Parents Association president

Susan Beck BatesA warm Hawkeye welcome to each of you from the Parents Association Advisory Board. Spring is such a wonderful time of year on the University of Iowa campus with the promise of warm weather and new experiences.

Congratulations to graduating students and the families who have supported their academic efforts. We know their years at Iowa have prepared them well for a bright future, and we offer them our best wishes.

Don’t forget to make your reservations for Family Weekend, which is scheduled for Oct. 25-27, 2013. Check out imu.uiowa.edu/family-weekend for updates. It’s always a wonderful time with various activities, entertainment, and, of course, Hawkeye football. Plan to attend, and make it a memorable weekend with your student.

In this issue of Parent Times, you will read about campus life for a typical undergraduate student at the University of Iowa; the profile of new student Regent Hannah Walsh also is inspiring.

On a personal note, my husband, Mike, and I have enjoyed our eight years on the Parents Association Advisory Board. We joined the board in 2005 as a way to serve the university and, honestly, as a way to stay in touch with our oldest son, Tom, who was a freshman. Now our twins, Andy and Betsy, will be graduating in May. Working with and learning from wonderful people such as UI President Sally Mason, Vice President for Student Services Tom Rocklin, UI Alumni Association CEO Vince Nelson, and Parents Association liaison Belinda Marner has truly been our pleasure. We encourage other parents to get involved.

We wish all members of the Hawkeye family a happy and healthy summer.

On, Iowa! Go, Hawks!
