Their bags are packed, they're ready to go…

Get the scoop on our new move-in schedule for first-year students

Student with tiger hawk backpackWhat do you get when more than 4,000 students and their families try to move into the residence halls all at once?

With any luck, neither you nor we will ever have to know.

In order to make move-in as painless as possible, University Housing & Dining assigns a move-in time and date to all first-year students. By now, your student should have received his or her room and move-in assignment by e-mail. If not—or if that assignment got misplaced—contact University Housing & Dining contracts and assignments staff at 319-335-3000.

Students who are living in odd-numbered rooms will move in on Wednesday, August 15. Students who are living in even-numbered rooms will move in on Thursday, August 16. Students also have been assigned a time period for their move-in: morning (9 a.m. to noon), afternoon (noon to 3 p.m.), or evening (3 to 6 p.m.).

Students must bring their Iowa One Card (their official UI student ID, which also will serve as their building entrance proximity card) to the residence hall. This card was issued at Orientation. If your student did not attend Orientation (or lost the card), they should go to the Iowa One Card Center at 3 Jessup Hall before arriving at the residence hall.

During move-in, traffic personnel will instruct you where to go as you approach the halls. Follow their directions to the unloading zones, unload your student’s belongings, then follow their instructions to a designated parking area away from the halls. Free shuttles will make continuous loops between the residence halls and the parking areas.

We know moving your son or daughter into a new home can be stressful. Please be patient. A move-in crew will be available to help.

Students wishing to move in before their assigned day may do so on Sunday, August 12 between noon and 6 p.m. or Monday, August 13 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Students moving in on these days will be charged a $30-per-night fee until their assigned move-in day. They can request a new move-in time by going to this site:

Returning student move-in is Saturday, August 18, beginning at 9 a.m.
