A letter from the Parents Association president
And welcome to winter at the University of Iowa! Our campus looks beautiful at this time of year—although I happen to think it looks great all year long. There’s something very invigorating about walking on such a vibrant campus on a cold day with everyone bundled up and full of energy. And one person that is very full of energy and Hawkeye spirit is UI Alumni Association CEO Vince Nelson, who is featured in this issue of Parent Times. His work ethic and wisdom are inspirational. “Once a Hawkeye…” rang true for this Hawkeye as I stood proudly at September’s Iowa-Northern Illinois game with tears running down my cheeks as the “Iowa Fight Song” was played at Soldier Field in Chicago. The University of Iowa is expanding the living-learning communities (LLC) concept, and that is a good thing for students. By living in an LLC, students discover unlimited opportunities, from move-in day and making new friends with shared interests, to interactions with faculty and an easier transition process during the first year. The truly inspirational Schmitz family was honored with the Mom and Dad of the Year awards at Family Weekend 2012. They are a wonderful example of the benefits of hard work for their family and community. It was a pleasure to meet them and their family. And in the spirit of being prepared, the dates for Family Weekend 2013 have been announced—Oct. 25-27, 2013. Make those hotel reservations now! Winter at the University of Iowa is a very exciting time with many events to enjoy on campus such as Dance Marathon, various athletic events, and cultural and arts programs, just to name a few. Check www.uiowa.edu for event updates and locations. Best regards to each of you. On, Iowa! Go, Hawks! Susan Beck Bates (B.A. ’77) Arlington Heights, Ill.
