Come to Parents Weekend

A new school year is under way, and that means that it's almost time for Parents Weekend.
The weekend, October 23-25, will include an Old Capitol reception with President Mary Sue Coleman and UI Parents Association, tours of the new Levitt Center for University Advancement and Pappajohn Business Administration Building, and excursions to other University facilities. Those attractions include the famous driving simulator, the College of Engineering's ice laboratory, and a scale model of the Columbia River basin that helps engineering researchers learn how to route salmon around the turbines of dams on the river. Tour the Field House, home of the University's recreation facilities, or the UI Hospitals and Clinics.

In the evening, humorist Rob Weinstein will entertain in the Wheelroom of the Iowa Memorial Union.

You'll also have a chance to see a performance of Patsy, the musical about legendary country star Patsy Cline, in Hancher Auditorium.

On Saturday, the ever-popular pregame tailgate at Carver-Hawkeye Arena will pump up your school spirit so you can head to Kinnick Stadium and cheer on the Hawkeyes as they take on longtime rivals Wisconsin.

Following the game, you're invited to the Black and Gold Blowout in Carver-Hawkeye Arena-the first public appearance of the 1998 Men's Basketball team in a scrimmage.

In the evening, a nutty comedy about lovers, mothers, and therapists, Beyond Therapy, will be presented by the Riverside Theatre Company.

The weekend will conclude with a Farewell Brunch on Sunday from 9-11:30 a.m.

Tailgating for the Mind

This series of pre-football game seminars is free and open to the public, but registration is required. They will begin at 9 a.m. in 40 Schaeffer Hall and end in time to get to Kinnick Stadium before kickoff. Call (319) 384-0017 to reserve a seat.

New Major Popular

Environmental Sciences, the first new major undergraduate degree program to be offered by the university in years, is an interdisciplinary science program combining geology, biology and geography and leading to a bachelor of science in environmental sciences.

The goal of the program, which is less than 14 months old but already has more than 50 declared majors and more than 500 student enrollments in its introductory class, is to produce scientists who can tackle environmental problems that require a knowledge of either geoscience, hydrology, hydrogeology and water chemistry, or biological and ecological sciences.

The degree program builds upon courses already in the curricula of the three sponsoring departments.

Sesquicentennial Scholars

Two $1,500 University of Iowa Parents Association Sesquicentennial Scholarships have been given to Lianne Lassen of Sioux Center and Andrea Lemke of Wellman, in recognition of their high school academic success and achievements.

The scholarships are made possible by Parents Association through a pledge to The University of Iowa Foundation. The scholarships are designed to become part of the Presidential Scholarships awarded to top students in each class.

JOBTRAK Goes Online

The days of searching through jobs posted on the University of Iowa's Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office bulletin boards are over.

The UI Placement Office has teamed with JOBTRAK Corporation (http://www.jobtrak.com), one of the nation's largest on-line job listing services, to provide students and alumni the ability to search for jobs at any time and from anywhere in the world via the Internet.

Unlike publicly accessible career databases, the UI service has a unique and password-protected database on JOBTRAK that can only be accessed by UI students and alumni. This security allows employers to target their recruitment efforts to UI students and alumni, assuring them a highly qualified, motivated pool of candidates.

The service is provided for free to students and members of the UI Alumni Association; employers pay a nominal fee to post their positions.

UI students can get their free password by calling 335-1023, or by visiting the Business and Liberal Arts Placement Office at 24 Phillips Hall. UI alumni may call the Alumni Association at (319) 335-3294 to receive a password as a part of a membership package.

Student Billing Policy

Students may have U-bills sent to their parents' homes by completing a Certificate of Dependency form, available at the Office of the Registrar. This form must be signed by both parent and student, and either can terminate the agreement at any time. By signing the form, the student also authorizes the registrar to send his or her grades to the parent.

If the student wants to authorize grades being sent home but not the parental billing, the form to request is the Student Authorization for Parental (or Guardian) Access to Academic Records, also available from the registrar.
If you have questions, call (319) 335-0238.

Summer Enrollment Rises

Summer session enrollment at The University of Iowa reached a ten-year high in 1998, with 11,298 students enrolled. This is an increase of 178 students over the 1997 session, the Office of the Registrar reports.
Liberal Arts, Business Administration, the Graduate College, Law, and Pharmacy all registered gains in summer enrollment over the previous year.
