Another school year is under way and for many of us, saying
goodby to our sons and daughters who are leaving home for the
first time poses many questions. Are they prepared to be good
students? Good citizens? Understand their responsibilities as
well as their rights? Will they be able to earn the same grade-point
average they earned in high school? Will they work too many hours?
How will they cope with homesickness? How will they use their
free time outside of class? And as your hair turns gray, what
hair color will your son or daughter be sporting at Thanksgiving
break? How will that new-found freedom impact their lives-and
yours?
Those parents whose students have made it through that freshman
year or are transferring to Iowa may ponder these same questions,
but in time they'll begin asking how their students are prepared
for the job market. How will their education and experiences
lead to gainful employment? What placement services are available??
When do we start paying off student loans?
These and other questions will be addressed throughout the year
in Parent Times. It will arrive in your mailbox each September,
December, and April, with a special Residence Halls edition in
August of each year. Soon, Parent Times will be available
on a web page for those of you who are "computer-friendly."
Also, the Parents Association web page is accessible through
the main University of Iowa home page (www.uiowa.edu). Minutes
from recent Parents Association meetings are available there,
as well as other relevant information. The home page is the way
to find every nook and cranny within the University.
The Parents Association helps to create a closer relationship
among parents, students and The University of Iowa. Our purpose
is to act as a liaison group in helping parents learn more about
the University and its goals, to help parents become acquainted
with opportunities available to students as they progress through
their years at the University. We also assist the University
in accomplishing its mission by addressing needs that affect
the quality of the student experience.
Later this fall, University students will be calling parents
of freshmen students to ask you how things are going for your
son or daughter. This annual Freshman Calling Project offers
parents of freshmen to ask questions, raise concerns, or just
to give us some feedback about your student's experiences here.
As you offer encouragement and support to your student, remember
that the key to a successful transition for your student is their
involvement in the campus community. There are more than 350
recognized student organizations to join on campus and the Office
of Student Life is here to serve them at 145 Iowa Memorial Union.
Now, for some upcoming events to bring you closer to campus:
"Saturday Scholars: Tailgating for the Mind" is a new
mini-series of six programs on a variety of topics held at 9
a.m. in 40 Schaeffer Hall on home football Saturdays. Dean Linda
Maxson invites you to attend any or all sessions, but register
ahead by calling (319) 384-0017. Sessions are free and presented
by University of Iowa professors. Look for topic titles and speakers
in the calendar.
Do you have a son or daughter who is interested in medical school?
The College of Medicine presents Mini Medical School, "Microbes
and You." a three-part program taught by its faculty members.
Participants must register for all three sessions, which run
on consecutive Tuesday evenings from 6:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. in E331
GH. Classes are free and begin September 22, but late enrollments
will be accepted if space permits.
Parents Weekend is October 23-25. The Parents Association sponsors
a Friday reception with President Mary Sue Coleman and, in cooperation
with the Alumni Association, hosts a tailgate breakfast in Carver-Hawkeye
Arena before the game against Wisconsin. Registration packets
were mailed early in September and if you plan to attend, make
reservations now. Look for special instructions for booking a
hotel. Any questions should be directed to the Alumni Association.
As I begin my first year as the Parents Association president,
I look forward to your participation. Just as you encourage your
sons or daughters to get involved, I ask the same of you: get
involved. The Board of Directors and I look forward to hearing
from you.
