When your student arrives on campus in August, a two-week campus/civic festival will be in full swing. Its meant to welcome students to the University, and to give them many ways to meet new friends right away.
Called Weeks of Welcome, the festival includes dances, fireworks, an ice cream social, a downtown street festival, comedy, music, and movies in the Iowa Memorial Union, night games in the UI Fieldhouses recreational facilities, and a non-alcohol tailgate sponsored by Stepping Up, the campus organization that works to end binge drinking. Words on the Wind, the installation at Hubbard Park that contains the wishes of University students, faculty, and staff on ribbons tied to the fence, will be recreated, too. The WOW schedule includes open houses, picnics, and programs.
