RECRUITMENT INFORMATION Criminal Background Check Form The University of Iowa Department of Public Safety is seeking individuals who are looking for a unique and challenging law enforcement trainee position on a major university campus. The Public Safety Patrol Officer Trainee position salary is currently $35,725.68 per year plus an hourly shift differential for second and third shifts. During your training period, you will be scheduled to attend the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, also paid by the Department of Public Safety, and upon successful graduation will become a Certified Law Enforcement Officer with the State of Iowa. Your salary will increase upon successful completion of all training and movement to full police officer status. The maximum Certified Law Enforcement Officer salary is currently $50,801.04 per year. Hourly shift differential and overtime wages are in addition to the base pay. There are ample opportunities to increase your wages through overtime by working athletic, cultural, or other overtime events on campus. In addition to wages, the University of Iowa has a very generous benefit program including health and dental insurance, sick leave, vacation (starting at two weeks per year), twelve paid holidays per year, substantial retirement contributions to TIAA/CREF, life insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and pre-tax deductions for dependent care. Public Safety Patrol Officers are also covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the State of Iowa and AFSCME. The position requires working with computers, clerical experience, and a high level of organization. Upon completion of a training period, student dispatchers are sent to a 40-hour course to receive state certification in dispatching. Pay is commensurate with the responsibilities of the position. A typical schedule is two 8-hour shifts per week, but more hours are usually available. Security Guard Security Guards are the eyes and ears of the department. They look out for unauthorized activity and if found, report it via a two-way radio so a Public Safety Officer can handle the problem. They also provide information to the faculty, staff, students, and visitors on campus. Security Guards are generally assigned to three different areas, but are not typically limited to just one.
