PROJECT ID

WHAT IS PROJECT ID?

Project ID is a campus program designed to discourage theft of valuables from your residence hall. It also provides a record of your valuable property at the Department of Public Safety so in case of theft the serial numbers are on record and can be entered into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC). The NCIC is a national computer tracing system used for a stolen article entry so that the article can possibly be returned to the owner if sold or found, which also increases the chances that the perpetrator will be brought to justice. Because it reduces the profit in crime, this program has dramatically reduced burglary in communities where the majority of citizens have joined. Most thieves steal valuables for resale, but if they know that your valuables in your room are recorded, the criminal will look for easier and more profitable targets.

HOW DO YOU JOIN PROJECT ID?

Contact the Department of Public Safety Crime Prevention Officer Brad Allison to schedule an appointment at: 335-5043 or watch for Project ID sign-up days at your residence hall. You will be given a Project ID record sheet and project ID decals. If your entire floor participates, the floor will get a Project ID sign stating that all property on the floor has been recorded. DON'T DISPLAY PROJECT ID DECALS UNLESS YOU HAVE RECORDED YOUR PROPERTY WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY.

WHAT ELSE CAN YOU DO?

Project ID is just one of the simple, inexpensive and effective steps you can take to prevent residence hall thefts. You should also follow other precautions such as always locking your room even when leaving for just a minute. For further information about other crime prevention precautions you can take to protect your property contact Crime Prevention Officer Brad Allison at 335-5043. THEN DISPLAY THIS STICKER ON YOUR BELONGINGS… It tells a criminal that stolen goods can be identified and will be hard to dispose of. If found in the thief's possession, it will be solid evidence of possession of stolen goods. It's enough to send a thief looking for trouble elsewhere.
