Reporting Crime on Campus

What is the jurisdiction of the Department of Public Safety?
The Department of Public Safety is a full service law enforcement agency open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We investigate all crimes that occur on campus. If you are affiliated with the University of Iowa, but the crime did not occur on campus, then you have to go to the agency that has jurisdiction over where the crime is located.

If I call the department, what can I expect?
The dispatcher will ask for your name, address, and phone number, as well as a brief description of the problem. We need this information in case we need to contact you and make a complete police report. A police officer will be dispatched to your location to take the report. In most circumstances we ask the you to fill out a witness statement so we can accurately record the details of the incident. After the witness statement is completed the officer will witness your signature and notarize the document. Depending upon the case, the officer may follow-up on the case, or the case may be assigned to the Investigations Division.

Can I get a copy of the police report?
Reports that do not fall under exceptions to the open records law are available to the public. Therer is a charge for copies of reports to cover reasonable expenses in making them. The charges are based upon the amount of time to proces the request, with the minimum being $5. Copies of video tapes to DVD/VHS are $35, copies of digital interviews and pictures to CD are $20. Copies of photos to CD is $10. For copies of large reports, or reports that may be on microfilm or require extended labor to produce, the records department charges $20/hour, plus any other costs to produce the report.

How else can I report crime/problems on campus?
The Department of Public Safety is not the only place to take problems on campus. Sometimes the Department of Public Safety will refer cases to them when criminal charges do not apply, or they may be jointly investigated. Non-criminal incidents can be referred to the following departments:

We also take anonymous reports on from our silent witness website.
