Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships in Journalism
Who is eligible?
National winners in either the Yearbook Excellence Contest or the International Writing/Photography Contest are eligible to apply before May 10 for one of the Edward J. Nell Memorial Scholarships in Journalism. This scholarship is intended to pay $500 for 6-8 awards and $1,500 for two awards for tuition, room and board at any college or university that offers a major in journalism. The scholarship is awarded for the freshman year only and is paid in two installments (fall semester and spring semester).
What is required?
The application consists of three separate forms (Form I - Principal or Counselor; Form II - Student; and Form III - Journalism Adviser). All three application forms and supporting material (official transcript, applicant's letter regarding journalistic experience, five selections of student's published work and letters of endorsement from principal, counselor and/or adviser) must be postmarked (first class) or received in the Quill and Scroll office in Iowa City by May 10 to be eligible for consideration.
It is important for you to complete the information requested in the top portion of the vertical box on Form I - Principal or Counselor form before giving that form to those individuals. Be as complete as possible in providing this information.
Whenever space is inadequate for the information requested on any of the forms, please feel free to attach additional sheets to the form to provide the commentary needed.
It is your responsibility to check with the individuals who are completing the application forms to make sure the documents are postmarked and mailed by the May 10 deadline. We prefer to receive all of the application forms and documents in ONE PACKAGE to ensure that all of the materials arrive at one time.
Letters of recommendation may be placed in sealed envelopes, but must accompany the journalism teacher/publication adviser's application forms.
The application deadline is May 10.
