Student Scholarships in Journalism
Who is eligible?
National winners of the Yearbook Excellence Contest or the International Writing/Photography Contest are eligible to apply before May 10 for one of the Edward J. Nell Memorial scholarships in journalism, or one of two George and Ophelia Gallup awards. New in 2010, the Richard P. Johns Scholarship is open to all Quill and Scroll seniors, including those who did not enter contests. All scholarships can be used for tuition, room and board at any college or university. Recipients must major in journalism or mass communication. The scholarships are awarded for the freshman year only and are paid in two installments (fall semester and spring semester).
What is required?
Students must fill out an application form and write a personal statement to include in a scholarship application packet.
Directions for writing the personal statement and the letters of recommendation are attached to the application.
Here's more information about the items to be included in the application packet:
• Two letters of recommendation - one from a journalism teacher/adviser, and one from a principal or counselor. Each letter is to be sealed and signed across the seal by the recommender. See the types of topics to be addressed in the letters of recommendation on the information sheet, which is attached to the application.
• A personal statement of not more than 500 words written by the applicant, addressing significant topics, including journalistic experience, future plans, activities, honors, volunteer service, and how college will be financed. Sign and attach the Personal Statement section of the form, which prints out with the application, attesting to the accuracy of information submitted.
• Three examples of journalistic work, giving insight into the applicant's abilities and promise.
• A small color photo of the applicant, with the name written on the back.
