People> Trevor Schultz

Trevor Schultz — the 3rd place "sexiest man" of college bowl in 1996 — has endured highs and lows in his two careers as a quiz bowl player. A northern California native, his first career started at the University of California, Davis in 1991 when Trevor was a sophomore at that institution. Playing in Davis's first ever CBCI Campus Tournament, Trevor led his team of dorm teammates to an unspectacular 13th place finish. Over the next 4 years, however, Trevor would lead teams to three consecutive CBCI campus tournament finals (winning in 1994) and would coordinate Davis's first 4 invitational tournament excursions. Trevor also was the original founder of the Davis Quiz Bowl Club and had a hand in coordinating three campus tournaments and numerous practices. He was a full team member on Davis's 1994 CBCI Regional team and played on Davis's A teams at the 1994 Andrew Martinez Memorial and the Cardinal Classic IV. His final bow was to serve as coach for the 1995 UC Davis CBCI Regional team that finished 2nd at that year's R15. Trevor departed from Davis in the spring of 1995 — but his efforts there helped launch Davis into a golden age of competition.

Trevor's second career unfolded when he was accepted to the University of Iowa in 1995 and started classes that Fall. As an original co-founder of the Iowa team, Trevor has been intrinsically involved with the program for the duration of its existence and has traveled to more tournaments over the last four years than anyone else in the club (34 tournaments and counting). Over that time, Trevor has emerged from being an A-team filler-by-default to an A-team regular and has written more questions than he would care to admit to. His pre-Iowa strengths included current events, pop culture, life sciences, drama and general knowledge. At Iowa, however, Trevor has emerged as a decent lit player, a pretty good all-around science player and a very good art player. With additional knowledge in geography and certain social sciences, and a propensity to answer mythology questions against any players in any format, Trevor has established himself as a useful catch-all for many Iowa "A" squads. Trevor also has the unique distinction of being the only Hawkeye to compete on all 7 Iowa squads that have entered national tournaments (1996 ACF, 1997 NAQT and CBCI, 1998 NAQT, 1999 NAQT, CBCI and ACF). Apart from playing, Trevor has served as a former co-manager, co-coach, co-travel coordinator and for the spring 1999 semester — served as the team travel coordinator. More notably, Trevor has coordinated 5 campus and 4 invitational tournaments, and is known for his off-the-wall formats and innovations.

When in Iowa, Trevor does not have much of a social life outside of Quiz Bowl. Trevor earned an M.A. in Rhetorical Studies in 1998 and is staying at Iowa to finish the much-anticipated College Bowl documentary.. Trevor hopes that a film school will take him for Fall of 2000 whereupon he will change his status from a starving student to a starving artist-student.

When he is social, Trevor spends countless hours talking "shop" with Robert Trent and attributes at least 2,000 points in his career to Robert's unselfish sharing of knowledge and experience. Trevor loves SNeLies with the team and is always up for a Team excursion to a movie or to the mall. Trevor is looking very forward to being part of the inaugural Iowa College Bowl "house" and living with Jon and Heather in his final year at Iowa. Lastly, Trevor sends his best to departing team members and good friends Robert Trent, Wade Pfau and Andrea Tawil as they leave the Iowa ranks this season. Trevor will miss them greatly.
