Religion Graduate Student Organization

Position Descriptions

Co-Coordinator: Provides general management of RGSO activities and programs. This position has a two-year term and has signing authority for the organization. Organizational skills and a willingness to deal with “red tape” required. Substantial time commitment.

Secretary/Treasurer: Records minutes of meetings and posts minutes from weekly meetings to the RGSO ICON site. Also keeps track of money and serves as an authorized signing representative. The secretary treasurer is also responsible for dealing with the refundable recycling. Moderate time commitment.

Social Event Chair: Works to build community by planning social and service events for graduate students and the department. Particular commitments involve planning and executing the picnic at the beginning of the year for new students and end of semester parties. Contagious enthusiasm is a great aid in recruiting help with events. Moderate time commitment.

Sponsor Program Chair: Coordinates connections between veteran students with incoming graduate students. Requires some work over the summer and a willingness to be friendly to new students.

Faculty Committee Representative: Represents the graduate students to the faculty at their monthly or bi-monthly meetings. Contributing in meetings and reporting back to the graduate students is a must. Moderate time commitment.

Undergraduate-Graduate Liaisons: Work with faculty undergraduate director to promote undergraduate education and participation in the Religious Studies major. Ideally, there would be at least one event per year.

Lecture Committee: Organizes and arranges lectures and programs for RGSO including Faculty Lecture Series and Graduate Student Paper Presentations.

Webmaster: Responsible for keeping the RGSO website updated, especially with respect to student profiles. Responsible for implementing design changes as necessary.

Graduate Student Senate Representative: Sits on the Graduate Student Senate of the University and has opportunity for involvement in committees such as for travel funding or the judiciary branch. Moderate time commitment.

AAR Representative: Serves as a liaison with the national AAR organization and also coordinates regional AAR arrangements. Requires a two year commitment.

COGS Steward: Elected in the fall semester by all religious studies members of COGS (UE Local 896), the graduate student union at the University of Iowa. Every other year, our union negotiates a new minimum contract with the university for all graduate student employees at Iowa. The COGS steward attends the monthly COGS meetings, represents the interests of religious studies graduate student employees, and keeps members updated on contract negotiations and university-wide grievances. Moderate/substantial time commitment.
