Black American Gothic documentary project awarded IAC/NEA grant
We are pleased to announce that the documentary project Black American Gothic (Carla Wilson director/producer, Daniel Gross producer, Bridget Tsemo producer, Vershawn Ashanti Young consultant) has received $8,100 from the Iowa Arts Council sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. The film documents the exodus of Black people from the inner-city--a national demographic trend that impacts Iowa dramatically. Over the course of one year the project is tracking three black subjects from Chicago as they migrate west to Iowa City.

Rhetoric Department presents successful & vibrant public forum
- 9/26/05
The Rhetoric department combined its efforts with other University departments, the Provost Office, and the University Lecture Series Committee to present a public forum about Hurricane Katrina. Initiated by Bridget Harris Tsemo of the Rhetoric department, the event was well attended and covered by local media. Clicking on the links below will provide an archived schedule of the forum events and speakers, as well as a suggested reading list of articles and links to provide additional background and context. The reading list can also be used to create course materials, activities and assignments. Thanks to all of those who worked hard (and on such short notice) to organize and present such a vital forum for public discussion of these significant issues and events.

Instructional tech grants bring multimedia resources to Rhetoric classrooms
Rhetoric instructors have new options for bringing the Internet into their classrooms, as well as combining various audio-visual media as part of their instruction. We have added two EPB-based carts and two portable units for campus-wide use, each with a laptop (Mac or PC), a high-resolution projector, and sound system. Each is capable of hard-wired or wireless Internet access. A short training session is required before equipment can be reserved.
