This activity asks students to place themselves within conversations. Devise a series of Yes/No questions based on the readings and discussions you have had in class over this unit. Some examples might be “Eminem’s music is an example of appropriation”, “it is wrong that corporate interests co-opt so-called authentic street styles for profit”, or “teaching appreciation for various cultures is a more important goal for museums than returning artifacts to their country of origin”. After you ask each question, students will line up in a continuum from “Yes”/”Agree” to “No”/”Disagree” across the front of the classroom. You can call on people from various positions to explain why they feel this way and/or students that are basically in agreement can get together and quickly come up with arguments to justify their position. They will then debate with other small student groups that disagree with them. |
