A 10:002 or 10:003 Unit ~ History, Memory, and Advocacy

Schedule
Formal Assignments

Goals:
Organization, attention to audience, interesting material, grammar and spelling, plus
  • Carefully mounting a persuasive argument that identifies the positions of others.
  • Using and effectively citing evidence.

The Assignment:

In the next few weeks we will be reading several editorials that present differing positions on the controversy surrounding the proposed exhibit on the Enola Gay and its subsequent cancellation.  In this paper you will advocate your own position on the controversy.  In order to make your position tenable, you will need to understand the range of debate, use evidence, and say something new.

Obviously, the debates about the exhibit cover a wide range of topics, and you will not be able to cover them all.  You may choose any feature of the controversy you wish to focus on, but remember to acknowledge the arguments that have already been presented.  Remember – you do not want to simply repeat arguments that appear in pages 377-409 of Hiroshima’s Shadow; find something new to say.

Process:

1.     Identify and categorize the previous editorials found on pages 377-409 of Hiroshima’s Shadow

2.     Formulate your own argument and identify the most relevant editorials.

3.     Draft your own editorial.

4.     For the first workshop, come with a brief (one or two paragraph) statement of your own position and a list of the editorials most relevant to your position.

5.     For the second workshop, come with a first draft of your paper.

6.     For the third workshop, come with a second draft of your paper.

Other Requirements:

Your paper should be at least 3 and no more than 5 pages long.
