What is the Morphing Textbook?
Welcome to the web home of the University of Iowa’s Rhetoric Department's original Morphing Textbook Project.
This project was made possible by an Instructional Improvement Grant from the University
of Iowa Office of the Provost. This collection of rhetoric tools and 4-7 week teaching
units – including theme, rationale, class plan, informal and formal
assignments, evaluation forms, and readings – is designed to help both
new and returning instructors devise their own material for teaching 10:001,
10:002, and 10:003 rhetoric courses. The Project was originally developed and administered by Professor Daniel M. Gross.
Born of the frustration that comes from using textbooks geared towards a national audience, this project offers examples of effective application of a controversy-centered curriculum. Each unit is designed by an experienced Graduate Student Instructor to meet the unique needs of the University of Iowa community, offering locally appropriate examples and materials for discussion, speech and composition.
In the 2008-2009 academic year, the Rhetoric Department will be introducing a 'morphed' version of the original project. Our new site will take on a new name as well: The Teaching Commons. The redesigned site will provide sample assignments, both formal and informal, that take up our instructional efforts to improve and develop student skills in reading, writing and speaking.
If you develop a teaching unit that you think would add a new dimension to the project, we encourage you to send it to the Project Director (william-jennings@uiowa.edu).
Enjoy—
