One impromptu exercise I’ve used in my classes to introduce this unit is to have students spend a class period thinking about the many different ways one could interpret the “us” vs. “them” cartoon on pg. 652 in the reader (4th ed.). I usually begin by talking about how the motto “E Pluribus Unum” is used in reference to America-as-melting pot metaphor. I then ask them to spend the period writing a response to this metaphor thinking about how one could see this cartoon in both a positive light, suggesting the inclusiveness of America, or as a critique of the way our society excludes some on the basis of race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc. |
