With the help of Bill and a few minutes in the FJ shed...heh, heh...I have compiled a state of the fleet.
The hulls of the FJ's are in remarkably good condition. FJ 28 needs fiberglass work on the centerboard. Mark tells me that 24's centerboard made a cracking noise once. There are a hand full of FJ's that need hardware replaced or repaired.
The new FJ's are here! 33 has a bent mast and we will need to straighten it.
The Laser fleet, however, is in a world of hurt. Bill the person has ordered many parts and inspection ports for this winter's repairs.
Other boats that need repair include: the 505 (barberhauler), windsurfers, and some of the miscellaneous boats (jon boats, pontoon, etc.) Talk to one of the fleet captains if you are interested in helping out.
(If you have any ideas/suggestions/desires please contribute them.)
1. Do preventative maintenance on the Lasers: cut inspection holes and fiberglass the mast step, replace broken rudder lift stops, replace plastic cleats, replace some lines, sew sails.
2. Work on trailers: replace the heavy green ones and modify others.
3. Repair 28's centerboard, order & install hardware, sew sails.
4. Add shelving to the work shop/do something with the E/C-scow sails, sew sails.
5. Sew things with the new sewing machine. (sorry no picture)
If you have any bright ideas on how to get rid of any/all C-Scows tell somebody.
No Standing in FJ's or Lasers while they are on trailers.
Remember to pull center boards up and CLEAT them in a springy cleat on the gunwhale (gunnel).
Elections will be Wednesday November 30 at 7 pm in the Indiana Room of the Union. Get your favorite for officer positions primed and nominated!
The new FJ's are here, but not yet registered, so sailing them may cost you more than a fall/spring membership until they are properly registered! (Thanks Steve-0)
Well, its been a summer. Now its turning into late fall. The water is getting cooler and the wind is getting stronger. Remember that the club requires all of its members to wear life jackets when the water temperature is below 55F/12C/285K and two boats to be within hailing distance when the water temperature is below 50F/10C/283K, the current water temperature is reported to be 58.5F/14.7C/287.7K. Updates on the water temperature will be posted near the phone/check out spindle. These rules are for your safety, the rules only work if you obey them and inform others why the rules exist, (hypothermia can occur in less than five minutes in 50F/10C/283K water).
I was glad to see light weather helmspersons using good judgement on Saturday. The wind was up on the main lake and I saw several boats venture out and quickly return because they didn't feel comfortable with their ability, one boat brushed up their skills by sailing around in the cove. It is part of getting one's Heavy Weather Helmsperson rating to know one's limits and abilities.
The boat house will officially close on Saturday November 19, 1994. Plan on coming out to the boathouse around 11 am. With enough help we should be able to complete all of the work in a couple of hours. Bring grilling supplies/goodies for a mid afternoon barbeque.
The Western Regionals (???) [to you old salts it's Area C's] will be here Saturday November 5 and Sunday November 6 (if necessay). Teams from throughout the midwest will be here to qualify for The Timme Angsten Memorial Regatta (Timmes) will be held at Belmont Harbor in Chicago during the weekend of Thanksgiving. (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The top four (???) teams from Area C's (Western Regionals) will advance to this regatta. The Rear Commodore / Team Captain, Brenda Ward would like you to call her if you would like to help out. (339-9883) Help is needed for food, race and protest committees. In addition extra hands will be needed to set up and put away the boats. This is a great way to experience what collegiate racing is all about and to learn more about sailing. Remember, just like everything in the club no experience is necessary.
Help us keep our pages up-to-date. If you have corrections or additions, or a question about what's posted here, contact a club officer. Thanks.
