Minutes from UISC Members Meeting on Wednesday, 2/8/06 in the Purdue Room, Room 341 in the IMU.

The meeting was called to order at 7:02 p.m. by Commodore Ben Miller-Todd. There were 24 people attending.

I.  The minutes from the last Members Meeting on Feb. 1st, 2006 were read by Secretary Amy Rohlfing.  Moved (Darling/ Steinman) to approve minutes without change.  Motion passes.

II. Officer Reports:

    A. Ben Miller-Todd, Commodore:

         i. The team went to the MCSA Midwinter's conference last weekend.

We learned a lot, got a lot done, and had a good time.

    B. Jenna Burken, Treasurer:

         i. The books have been reconciled for the first time in six months.

ii. Right now the U.S. Bank account and the account with Rec. Services are a little low because we bought the tug and two FJs this year and have not yet sold any boats.

    C. Lindsey Schneider, Executive Advisor:

         i. Jim Erwin, vice-commodore of the Buccaneer 18 one-design fleet, sent Lindsey an email about the Buccaneer 18 championships at the Waukegan yacht club (about 45 min. north of Chicago) this year.  All students (with an id) under the age of 25 are eligible to enter.  Go to www.buccaneer18.org for more information.  The club does not own any Buccaneers, so all interested would have to find a Buccaneer to sail.

ii. The rules for the photo contest were sent out on the Listserve and the rules will be posted on the website by the end of the month.

    D. Erin Wehr-Flowers:

         i. Erin would like to start working on the club's calendar for the year.  If the team would upload the regatta schedule on the website, she will schedule the days for the open house and teaching.

    E. Warren Darling, Faculty Advisor:

i.He still needs five photos of Erin and Lindsey for the club leadership awards.

III. Old Business:

    A. The announcement was made last week to increase the number of E scows for sail.  Moved to bring the motion back to the floor.

         i. John Huntley again asked people to vote in favor of the motion. If we sell the extra E scows, we will have more time to spend on the other boats.

ii. Rich Adkins also mentioned that we have less than $10,000 in the bank account.  If we sell more boats we will bring the bank account back up. And, if at the end of the summer, the boats still have not been sold, we can opt to keep them.

iii. The motion to offer three E scows for sale passes.

IV. New Business:

    A. Warren Darling will talk to Wayne Fett about the boathouse and heaters.  He will also offer to buy a thermostat for the boathouse that will turn the heat off automatically after a certain time period (see minutes from Exec. Meeting for more information)

    B. Matt Legg and Lindsey Schneider gave a report on the MCSA Midwinter's Conference last weekend.

         i. The team is signed up for regattas almost every weekend from March 25th until the end of school.  The FUJ regatta we host in the spring will be April 1st and 2nd.  Hopefully we will have club volunteers to help.

ii. The team attended various seminars about rules, team building, and goal setting.  We also attended an open forum and the annual meeting of the MCSA.  Our own commodore, Ben Miller-Todd, was elected vice-commodore of the MSCA.  Feel free to ask any of the team members any other questions about the conference.

    C. The sailing team will have a booth for the club and team at the Student Activities Fair on Wednesday Feb. 15th from 11:00-2:00 in the second floor ballroom of the IMU.  The team will be making posters on Thursday evening and would also like to hand out fliers to students.  Erin offered to make a flier of the club's calendar with club and team activities in April and

May.

    D. Motioned (Legg/ Schneider) that all members nominated for the Albatross can not refute or rebut the nomination.

         i. This would allow members to make up stories about someone else and would make up for the lack of nominations during the winter.

ii. Counter nominations are acceptable; this would be the only way to defend yourself.

iii. Moved (Huntley/ Adkins) that the motion be tabled until next week.  Motion to table original motion passes.

V. Announcements

    A. John Huntley circulated the wet water wager logbook.  There is more cold weather coming and the kitty is getting bigger and bigger.  Place your bets now!

    B. John Huntley is also working on the next copy of the Scuttlebutt.  It will be sent out through the Listserve as a PDF file by Friday (you need 200 copies to send out for non-profit postage and we will not have that number). He will get another one out March 1st and will send one out each month following that.  He still needs reports from officers about their goals for

office and a report on the attempt to fundraise after 40th anniversary.  Today we received $100 from former commodore, but otherwise not too much money has been raised, probably less than $1,000.

    C.  Next Wednesday, after the Club meeting (which ends at about 7:30) Bill Budelier and John Huntley would like to meet with all Heavy Weather Helmsmen and other ISC members interested in becoming skipper in Room 341 of the IMU.

         i. They want to outline the path from where you are now to the Club's top rating, Skipper and wish want to help all members along the path to the ultimate goal.  They hope to make the progress there happy, quick and easy.  They are going to review the Skipper's test item by item, discuss the questions, explain and personalize their implications for your own experience

and style of sailing.

ii. To get your own copy of the current test, go to our Web Site, then go to the Library, then click, copy, paste, and print.  The standards that define the Skipper rating are in your log book.

    E. Albatross nominations (need to be true this week).

         i. Lindsey nominated Amy Rohlfing for creating the Eric Orzechowski challenge in honor of former team and club member Eric Orzechowski.  Last year at Midwinter's, Eric was found “passionately kissing” a girl from another sailing team on the floor of a gym within twenty minutes of arriving at the conference.  To encourage this type of inter-team “bonding,” any IU team member who kisses a member of another sailing team (of the opposite sex) in a public place will receive $1.  Any IU team member who kisses a fellow IU team member (of the opposite sex) in a public place will receive $2.  And any IU team member who kisses someone of the same sex in a public place will receive $3.

ii. Lindsey also nominated IU team members Matias Perret and Karl Friedrichsen for winning the 1st Annual Eric Orzechowski challenge.  The two shared a cartoon-like, semi-passionate kiss (lasting at least three seconds) on the back of a charter bus shuttling all MCSA members between our hotel and a bar.

iii. Karl and Matias jointly won the coveted award for the week.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:32 p.m.

Submitted by Amy Rohlfing, secretary.
