Exam Accommodations

Overview

Alternative Exam Services within our office facilitates test accommodations for students who are eligible for modifications such as extended time, readers, scribes, or the use of a word processor. Students eligible for any of these services will present a Student Academic Accommodation Request (SAAR) form to their instructors at the beginning of the semester.

Arranging for Exams to be Administered in Our Office

Instructors and students may arrange for exams to be given in our office. To request this service, the instructor fills out the information requested on the student's SAAR form:

  • Time and dates of exams
  • Instructions for exam administration
  • Special Instructions

Timely completion of SAAR forms is critical for arranging exam accommodations at our office and is necessary to ensure that each exam is administered according to the directions of the instructor.

To take an exam in our office, students are required to make an appointment with us one week in advance of the test. This gives our office time to get the exam from the instructor and to clarify any questions we might have about adminstering the test.

Sending Exams to Student Disability Services

Instructors may send exams to Student Disability Services via e-mail, fax, or campus mail. If you choose to send an exam by e-mail, it works best to send the file as a Microsoft Word or PDF document. Send it as an e-mail attachment addressed to: sds-exams@uiowa.edu. Please provide the following information in the e-mail:

  • Student's name
  • Course number and name
  • Instructor's name
  • Exam date
  • Return method for completed exam (select one):
    • Instructor picks up exam in our office
    • SDS returns exam to instructor by Campus Mail
    • SDS scans exam and sends it to instructor via e-mail
    • Student delivers exam to instructor in sealed envelope
  • Return location
  • Any additional instructions (calculator, notes, open book, etc.)

For other questions regarding exams or Exam Services, please call (319) 335-1462.
