Mission StatementThe mission of Student Disability Services (SDS) is to assure access through reasonable accommodations to qualified students who currently demonstrate a condition producing significant functional limitations in one or more major life activities. Equal access to education is achieved when barriers to learning are removed and students with disabilities are allowed to compete solely on the basis of their academic skills and abilities. SDS collaborates with and empowers students to identify and understand their strengths, thereby cultivating opportunities for self-advocacy and independence that allow students to benefit from their college experience and to be successful. Support for students who have disabilities as well as the education of the larger community about disability related concerns allows SDS to facilitate the elimination of attitudinal barriers regarding students with disabilities. In providing academic accommodations to qualified students
with disabilities, SDS seeks to promote equal opportunity within the context
of a diverse university community through practices that reflect the mission
and values of The University of Iowa.
