Here are a few voice-saving suggestions from fellow teachers:
"For my learning disabled students, I simply audiotape my voice when I read aloud to a group. I then play the tapes for my other classes; I also take advantage of books on tape at the school's library."
"Use a fun or beautiful drinking glass to make sipping water seem like a treat!"
"I teach my first graders a few American Sign Language gestures at the beginning of each schoolyear. It really protects my voice."
"I ring a bell when I need the attention of the entire class so that I never have to speak above my kids. This works well in my science classroom where we are often noisy while doing a lab."
"I teach my kids proper breathing techniques at the beginning of the school year. It helps them understand the importance of breathing, but also lets them know where I am coming from with my voice challenges."
"I teach with an amplification system at all times. I had to purchase it myself, but it has kept me from finding a quieter career."
