Help for Sexual Assault Survivors
Sexual assault is a destructive force in our culture and college campuses are certainly not immune to this problem. Fortunately, we have many valuable services on campus and in our community to assist someone who has been sexually assaulted. Help is available. Read on for local resources to help you or someone you care about.
Resources for help
Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP)

- When you call RVAP, you will talk with a trained sexual assault victim advocate. Phone lines are open 24 hours a day for immediate and short-term counseling. RVAP offers many services including medical advocates who can accompany you to medical appointments, legal advocates, confidential counseling, and educational programs. RVAP also talks with survivors' families, friends and co-workers should they call.
Johnson County Sexual Assault Response Team (JCSART)

- This website outlines many Johnson County support systems and helping outlets. This site is a great place to get linked to groups and programs.
Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline

- The Iowa Sexual Abuse Hotline is housed at the Rape Victim Advocacy program and answered by trained sexual assault counselors. Callers dealing with sexual assault issues can receive crisis intervention, information, support and local referrals.
Crisis Center

- The Crisis Center has trained volunteers to offer emotional and material support in an accessible, nonjudgmental and caring environment. Their phone lines are open 24 hours a day. They also offer individual face-to-face counseling from 11am to 11pm daily.
Women's Resource Action Center (WRAC)

- WRAC offers many different services to women in our community. They offer fun and informative women's groups, individual counseling, and sponsor events and speakers around the community.
University Counseling Center (UCS)

- UCS has 12 licensed psychologists available by appointment to counsel and discuss anything. They are open for appointments Monday through Friday, and also offer same day services. Services are limited to UI students.
Emma Goldman Clinic

- The Emma Goldman Clinic is a non-profit women's health center. They offer reproductive services, gynecological exams, abortion, STI testing and much more. They also offer free pregnancy testing and options counseling, prenatal and adoption referrals, blood pressure checks, birth control consultations, and information about sexually transmitted infection (testing is by appointment only).

- Planned Parenthood is a nationwide health clinic offering services to five million women, men, and teens each year.Each center has different services based on community needs. There is a Planned Parenthood right here in Iowa City! You may also call the national number or go online to locate other sites and make appointments.
UI Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC)

- The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is located right here in Iowa City and is very close to campus. They offer obstetrics and gynecological services to women. UIHC has some of the top doctors in the nation and women from all over come to see these doctors. The UIHC also has a trauma/crisis center to help in emergency situations they are open 24 hours. UIHC will also help you to get in contact with local law enforcement or other agencies as needed.
Student Health Service

- Student Health Service offers services to UI students only. They have obstetrics and gynecological services and will help you to contact any other agency that is needed. SHS is open Monday and Thursday from 8am to 6pm, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8am to 5pm, and Friday from 8am to 4:30pm.

- The police department can help in emergency situations.They can also help should you decide to press charges.Reports made to the Iowa City Police Department will be recorded and investigated on a case-by-case basis.
UI Department of Public Safety

- The UI Department of Public Safety covers the UI campus only. They patrol the areas directly associated with campus and surrounding. They also offer Rape Aggression Defense Training.
