Alcohol and Drug Assistance Program: Helping Students Reach their Goals
As part of the Alcohol and Drug Assistance Program, Health Iowa / Student Health Service offers a variety of educational programs to help students with drug and alcohol policy violations reflect on the role substances are playing on in their lives. Health Iowa offers substance education services designed to help at risk students make informed decisions about the use and role of substances in their lives.
The Alcohol Education Workshop (AEW) is designed for students with first offense residence hall alcohol violations. Classes meet one time for an hour and a half, and are offered 1 times throughout the semester. The effects of alcohol on the body, blood alcohol concentration, tolerance, and risks of use are covered. Students who are referred to AEW by their Residence Hall Manager may register for any one session by calling Residence Services Office 319.335.3700.
The Seminar On Substances (SOS) is designed for students with residence hall drug/alcohol policy violations, students who are referred from the Office of Student Services or the court system. Classes meet for two, two-hour sessions approximately two weeks apart. We offer at least 20 sections throughout the the semester. Classes focus on personal reflection, values and decision making, images of alcohol in the media, and high risk behavior, Registration for the Seminar On Substances is offered through Health Iowa / Student Health Services Westlawn Building 319.335.8394. There is a charge for the Seminar on Substances and other substance abuse services.
Evaluations: Evaluations consist of an individual interview between the student and Health Iowa's certified substance abuse counselor. Together, they determine what role alcohol or other drugs play in the student's life. Afterward, the counselor discusses options that the student may wish to pursue. The options may include, but are not limited to, participation in an education series, short-term outpatient treatment, or a continuing care support group. Students requiring assistance beyond the scope of our programs may be referred to other University or community agencies.
BASICS (Brief Alcohol Screenng and Intervention for College Students): Consists of two 1:1 sessions with the substance abuse counselor. Together, goals are set and motivation to change personal risk behaviors is enhanced.
Marijuana Information Series (MIS): This group series meets twice, and includes a personal feedback component. A focus on individual choices as well as the role of the environment in risky behaviors is central to MIS. MIS may also be delivered in an individual format, called IMAP (Individual Marijuana Assessment Program).
Education/Outreach: Health Iowa staff present workshops and provide training on a variety of alcohol/other drug issues upon request.
