Myths About Treatment
Myth: no one recovers without treatment
TRUTH: studies show that problems can correct themselves over time. Many people are able to change their behavior without having formal treatment. Sometimes people get help from family members or self-help groups like Alcoholics Anonymous.
Myth: Nothing will help people with their substance abuse problems
TRUTH: We do know that people involved in treatment do have positive outcomes. They may be able to remain abstinent or cut down their alcohol or drug use.
Myth: everything works equally well
TRUTH: Research shows that some treatments tend to be more effective than others. Treatment needs depend on the person and their drug of choice.
Myth: There is one superior treatment
TRUTH: There isn't one thing to help everyone. Treatment needs are individualized- an effective treatment plan should be formulated by taking into account individual needs and strengths.
Myth: Hospital Treatment is most effective
TRUTH: Research shows there are similar outcomes for inpatient and outpatient treatment.
Myth: substance abuse counselors are recovering addicts
TRUTH: Some are and some are not. There are many different ways that people enter the field of substance abuse counseling. People often think that only a recovering person can help others overcome a substance abuse problem. Another way to think of this is to ask ourselves if we require our physicians to have experienced every illness they treat us for. Certainly not, because we realize that they are well trained.the same can be said of substance abuse counselors.
