Degrees and Requirements

The BA degree requires a minimum of 33 semester hours and the BS degree requires 45 semester hours. Courses taken pass/nonpass do not count toward the semester hour requirement in sociology. A GPA of 2.0 in sociology courses is required of majors (you must meet this both with and without transfer credit). Students may satisfy no more than 15 semester hours of their total hour requirement in the major with sociology courses transferred from other schools. In addition to completing the required courses listed below, the Sociology Major requires the completion of a Portfolio with representative samples of the student's work and progress in the major.

Portfolio Requirement

At the time of graduation students are required to provide the department a group of documents which will comprise the student's Sociology Major Portfolio. The primary purposes of the Portfolio are for students to possess a record of development within the department for personal recall and reflection; and to have an attractive set of materials that can serve in presenting evidence of a student's interests and work to prospective employers and graduate schools. The Sociology Major Portfolio should include at least these three documents: (a) a paper from the first two years of classes in sociology (such as a book review or a statement comparing competing theories); (b) a research paper that reports the findings of original research; and (c) a statement summarizing an experience where some application of sociological knowledge occurred (such as a report on an internship, a summary of contributions sociological information made to a summer job; or a reflection on a period of study abroad). Together the materials should display development toward technical correctness in citing others' work; accurate use of sociological concepts; technical proficiency in using research methods; and the ability to explain implications of research findings.

Note: Students taking the required Capstone Course will have completed this portfolio within the course. In order to complete the requirements for your degree, two sets of this portfolio must be turned into the main office, located at W140 Seashore Hall.
