Day 1
Introduce three day lesson to students and hand out materials. Give them time to read and become familiar with material handed to them. Then, divide group in half - those who will argue for women's rights and those who will argue against allowing more rights for women. It is key that there be a mixture of male and females representing each side of the debate. Tell them that the debate will be conducted in a orderly fashion by you, the moderator, with each side being directed to give five minute opening statements and timed responses with additional time for rebuttal. (Refer to second day timeline.) Each group member must speak at least once.
They should be instructed to do the following in their group:
Allow students to get into their groups and start formulating their platform. Extra assistance may need to be given to the side against women's rights because their platform is less obvious but just as strong. It is important that the teacher assist both groups to focus and assist where possible. Encourage them to work outside of class if they like.
