I chose social work as my major and career because it was a new and exciting area for me. My family and I have always been involved in social work activities in one way or the other and I have been brought up by social work value systems. It was, however, my own decision to join social work. I chose the University of Iowa because I heard about it from one of my professors at my University in India. I came to know that it is a reputable University, so I applied for it. I am interested in working with families especially women and children. I am also interested in working on mental health issues. After my social work doctorate degree, I’d like to go into teaching and work on my own projects in the field. Before working independently and joining teaching, I would like to get as much field experience as I can!

I chose social work as my career because I love working with children and families and because of the values and ethics that social workers have. I chose the Family-Centered Practice Concentration because it is my hope to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in at-risk youth. The University of Iowa School of Social Work has given me a great opportunity to learn from the best and I am more than prepared to begin working in the social work profession because of the strong foundation I received here at Iowa.

I chose social work as my major and career because I love working with people and have a strong desire to encourage, improve, guide, listen, learn, teach, and inspire as well as take all of these things for myself. Also, I’d like the chance to give back to the community that has given me so much. I’m very interested in Family Centered Practice and would like to work with the Native American population, particularly with child welfare.

I chose social work as my major because of my deep personal feeling to help empower everyone, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, race, and culture. I am most interested in practicing with teens and youth. I intend to proceed to a graduate program most likely specializing in child welfare. My experience here at Iowa & the school of social work have been wonderful and a once-in-a lifetime chance!

After a thorough research among different academic fields that could nurture me for this endeavor, I chose social work because, after scrutinizing the curriculum for the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa, I believe it offers me the best academic environment and opportunities to anchor my study into issues of the elderly. I intend to develop my research along this line with specific reference to Africa with an emphasis to elderly populations in South Africa and Kenya. My guiding premise is that the ageing population has not received the attention it deserves especially those affected with debilitating illnesses such as Dementia, Alzheimer’s or Osteoporosis.
