Pizza Crisis: We need a first year MSW student to go get the credit card at the IMU and order the pizza then the pizza place will deliver it. The credit card can be picked up at the Office of Student Life business office any time after 8 or 9 in the morning. We need one person to volunteer for November and one person for December. You can contact JenHolly at
jennifer-h-anderson@uiowa.edu for more details. It's so easy! You'll feel good for helping :)
We are working on setting up a practicum fair at which first year students could talk with second year students about any questions they have about practicums. We thought maybe we could do this in more of a social context than a formal setting. Keep an eye open for updates about this opportunity!
School of Social Work Movie Nights
Movie nights are for all social work students, faculty and staff and take place on the first Friday of every month (we will skip January since school will not be in session). Movies will from now on be shown in North Hall room 332 (no longer at the IMU) at 8:30 pm. Movies will be followed by a discussion of the relevant themes. You may bring a friend or significant other. Please RSVP a day or 2 before each movie at anne-wiser@uiowa.edu to let her know if you are coming and how many of you are coming so we can make sure there is room for all who want to attend.
Friday November 6th we will show City of God (Cidade de Deus) a Brazilian crime drama based on a true story about two boys growing up in a violent neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro and them taking different paths: one becomes a photographer, the other a drug dealer.
For the movie to be shown Friday December4th, Professor Motier Haskins requested we show "The Story of India" a 2007 PBS documentary exploring the rich culture o f India that takes viewers on a fascinating journey from the country's ancient origins to its significant place in our contemporary global community. Hosted by noted British historian Michael Wood, the documentary explores the many facets of Indian society, including the arts, spiritual traditions, the diverse population, the rising high-tech business community and much more.
This will be a great choice to prepare students who will be going on the winter trip to India (and for others who wish they could go).
Here is the updated list of potential movies and tallied votes so far. You can vote for the movies that most interest you by e-mail or in person when you come to movie night. For info about each movie consult http://www.imdb.com/.
