Questions
What is the purpose of the study?To build understanding about nursing home social services.
Why are you doing this?
There has never been a nationally representative study of nursing home (bed size 20+) social services. In order to build awareness of the important role of social services, we need basic data.
Who is in the study?
We are mailing about 2,000 surveys to a randomly selected national sample of nursing homes. We are hoping for a 50% response rate.
Where did you get the addresses?
We purchased a list of the 16,000 nursing homes in the U.S. from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services.
Are the responses confidential?
YES. The database we are using to store the data we receive from the respondents contains NO NAMES of individual social service directors, or any of their staff members.
What will you do with the results?
We will post preliminary findings from the GROUP of responses on this web site mid-fall 2006.
We will prepare articles and submit them to research journals, so that the information we learn can be distributed as broadly as possible.

What are their opinions about their job?
What do they believe is important in terms of preparing new social service staff to be effective in addressing resident emotional needs?
