Bill's Coffee Shop
Wild Bill's Coffeeshop is a service learning project in the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa. The Coffeeshop is operated by adults with major disabilities, thus providing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, practicum opportunities for University students working with persons with disabilities, a service amenity for those who enjoy the food and hospitality of the coffeeshop.

Annual Latino Conference
The Strengthening and Valuing Latino/a Communities in Iowa Conference is an opportunity to explore the changing demographics and dynamics of the Iowa Latino/a community. The conference also looks at he responsiveness of educators, policy makers, institutions, communities, business and organizations to the fastest growing population in Iowa and the U.S.

The School of Social Work will continue its tradition of conducting a community read and discussion as part of its diversity training.

The Middle of Everywhere: The World's Refugees Come to Our Town by Mary Pipher (2002), NY: Harcourt.
The book addresses diversity in the Heartland and covers a wide variety of cultural and religious groups who are refugees from Pakistan, Vietnam, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo, and Kakuma refugees from Kenya whose parents were killed in the Sudanese Civil War. The author introduces an interesting concept, the "cultural broker," the role she plays in bridging the gap between the refugees and the local culture in Nebraska. There are lots of stories of refugees mixed in with the author's stories about working with the refugees.

We encourage all faculty and students to read the book over the summer. The School will sponsor forums in fall semester to discuss the book. Dates to be announced in the early fall. The book will also be discussed in various classes because its content relates to different aspects of the curriculum including human behavior, practice, and policy.

Why Iowa?

I applied specifically to Iowa because they offered a joint degree program, which is not available in other schools. The SSW also gives me a lot of flexibility to accomplish my goal. For example, I’m in the four-year M.S.W tract and have the ability to switch down to the two-year tract once my schedule permits. There is a good community here. All the professors seemed well versed in their fields and had several publications. Overall, it seemed like a welcoming environment. The amount of diversity in terms of population, art, activities is very unique. Obviously it is an intellectual community. The city takes pride in their identity as the cultural center for Iowa.
