The University of Iowa School of Social Work

Sioux City MSW Program

The University of Iowa, School of Social Work implemented a three-year, part-time program in Sioux City, Iowa in the fall of 1999. This part-time program was created to help meet a shortage of professional master level social workers in the western part of the State of Iowa. A new cohort of up to 40 students is admitted every three years. The small size of the class allows students to create a study program tailored to their needs in a relaxed environment.

The Sioux City program is administered by the School of Social Work, in cooperation with the Division of Continuing Education, Center for Credit Programs. It is housed at Briar Cliff University, a Catholic liberal arts college, and is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.

Courses are taught by tenure track, clinical and adjunct faculty and visiting scholars on site and via CONNECT, a web based interactive communication system that allows long distance learners to participate in classrooms across the state. Instructors are experienced practitioners actively working in social work in the community.

Students register for an average of two courses each semester, including summers, and complete the degree in three years. Scheduling is structured to assist working students with most courses offered after 4:30 pm or through intensive formats. Students may take up to 12 hours of electives prior to admission.

Students from diverse academic and experiential backgrounds are valued and actively recruited by the program. Previous experiences in human services and cross cultural perspectives are desirable. Those admitted to the MSW program are eligible to apply for diversity scholarships that provide support for four consecutive semesters.

Application to the MSW program is made through the Graduate College of The University of Iowa and the School of Social Work. Application materials will be available after Sept. 1st, 2013 from the School's Admissions Coordinator Susan Dirks: susan-dirks@uiowa.edu 319-335-1255.

The application deadline is February 1, 2014 for the following fall semester. For more information about the Sioux City MSW program, contact Julie Kleinschmit. Click here for 2013 update.
