Greater Iowa City Housing Fellowship (GICHF) is a nonprofit Community Housing Development whose mission is to increase the access to and availability of affordable housing in Johnson County.
Affordable Rental Housing - GICHF develops and manages rental units at scattered sites throughout Iowa City. Housing types include single family homes, duplexes, townhouses and condominiums. All tenants are low-income and most receive rental assistance. Rents are controlled by governmental funding sources.
Home Ownership - GICHF constructs single family houses and sells them to low-income, first time home buyers. GICHF maintains ownership of the land and the home buyer enters into a long term land lease. This structure reduces the cost of the house by eliminating the cost of the land for the buyer. Newly constructed three bedroom houses are sold at target prices well below the average sales price in our area. Resale agreements ensure that the owner recoups initial investment and profits from any improvements made to their home.
Security Deposit Loan Program - Sponsored by First National Bank, this program arranges one year, no interest loans of up to $400 for a security deposit for low-income households. Loans are made based on the availability of funds.
Learning opportunities include: proposal writing, grants management, fiscal management, social development, and political action.
