Description:
The National Resource Center offers technical assistance, staff training, research and information services to agencies and individuals who are interested in learning about and putting into practice the philosophy and methods of family centered social services. The National Resource Center contracts with public and private social service organizations for its services and has worked with agencies throughout the U.S. Different opportunities include: learning about coordinating, organizing and administering an agency that reaches nationwide; participating in the design and execution of field research; developing resources for the quarterly newsletter; involvement in public education, promotion, funding development, and research in specialized areas of family based services; orientation to the array of national public and private agencies providing different models of family-based services.

Description:
Agency’s purpose is to bring programs into low-income neighborhoods, helping families access services and providing a link to other area resources. Programs and services: 1) Afterschool and teen activities with youth 5-18 years which include recreational and educational/tutoring programs. 2) Child care cooperative/preschool activities with very young children (birth-4 years) to promote developmental skill building and positive self-esteem/self awareness. 3) Parenting programs include group and individual counseling. Teen parents meet both at CEC and the center. 4) Outreach and support programs include short-term crisis counseling, financial management and nutrition assistance, communicating with families with specific needs (foreign born families, elderly, households experiencing domestic abuse). 5) Administrative activities include volunteer coordination, program planning and preparing reports. 6) Rural neighborhood coordinating in the community of Clear Creek.

Job Description For Practicum Students:
Assist in the implementation of our tutoring program on Tuesday evenings from 4:30 pm - 7:15 pm
Attend weekly meetings with Penn/Wickham school counselors on Mondays at 9:30 am and Tuesdays at 2:00 pm
Attend Child Study Meetings, Child Assistance Team Meetings and parent/teacher conferences on the families that the Family Specialist has a clientele
Attend in-home counseling sessions with the Family Specialist (various issues: behavior management, ADHD, stress management, school/home partnerships, problem solving in crisis situations, direct services, and referrals to resources within the community).
Assist in writing monthly newsletter
Learn about community resources that are available to share with families
Assist with our monthly fresh food and clothing distribution
Assist with the implementation of our Family, Food and Fun Nights (two in the fall and two in the spring)
Attend the North Liberty Family Resource Steering Committee (one in the fall and one in the spring)
Assist in the implementation of our monthly Parent Discussion Groups (Wednesdays from 5:30 pm - 7:15 pm)

 

North Liberty Community Food and Clothing Pantry

Practicum description:
The pantry is an outreach ministry of the North Liberty First United Methodist Church which serves North Liberty and the surrounding area by making free food and clothing available to anyone in need. Distribution is done from a center located north of the church, which is open a total of 8 hours during three days each week (Tuesday 3-6, Thursday 3-6, Saturday 10-12). The center serves 70 to 80 families a month. All staff are volunteers from both the church and the general community.

A practicum student with the pantry would have a number of opportunities to engage in client contact, community organizing and program development. While the specific tasks would be determined by the interests and abilities of the student, in consultation with the pantry coordinator and the practicum instructor, possibilities include:

Work hours would be flexible, depending on the needs of the student and availability of the coordinator but would require at least one Tuesday or Thursday afternoon (2-6 pm) each week. The student should be able to work independently and complete activities with limited supervision.

Description of agency and practicum activities:
Oaknoll is a non-profit retirement community providing LifeCare to residents 62 years of age and older. The role of the social worker is to provide direct social services to residents at all levels of care as well as their family members. Oaknoll participates in the Practicum Partnership Program with the School of Social Work .

Description:
Ottumwa Regional Health Center is a non-profit organization committed to providing quality primary and selected referral health services to the people of S.E. Iowa and N.E. Missouri. The purpose of the Medical Social Services Department is to provide services to patients and their families in order to promote optimal social functioning, and to enable patients to utilize health care to achieve their optimal level of health. Through direct service to patients and families, and through collaboration and consultation with the physician and other personnel, social work can aid the patient to utilize health care services and his/her own resources in treatment of an illness. The three service areas--Health, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse--are provided for an 8 county area on both inpatient and outpatient bases. Social workers provide discharge planning, crisis intervention, short and longer term therapy.

Two placements are available: one in Acute Care and one in Mental Health.
