Studio News:
Congratulations to UI Horn Studio TA Drew Phillips, who is the newly appointed instructor of horn and improvisation at Liberty University in Virginia starting Fall 2013! Drew is also a composer, and has recently turned out a series of terrific pieces for horn and piano.
UI Horn Studio DMA Student James Naigus was very busy at the Southeast Horn Workshop March 8-10 at Virginia Commonwealth University:
Composer in Residence (composer of “Primary Ignition” - required solo piece for the 1st round of the college solo competition; also adjudicator for this competition
Composer/performer of new horn quintet “Three Shades” (also playing: Patrick Smith, Kristin Smith, Paul Basler, David Jolley)
Composer/performer (on piano) of “Episodes” for horn & piano (with Paul Basler)
Performing his “Primary Ignition” on regional artist recital
Performing Paul Basler’s “Diversions” on regional artist recital
Performing (on piano) his “Reverie” on final recital (Rick Todd and Annamia Larsson, horns)
Also: the U of Florida horn choir + the VCU horn choir will be play his “Two Pieces” and “Bells”
Looking ahead: He will also be presenting a new commission in July at the 45th annual symposium of the International Horn Society
