Timothy Gupton

I am a Ph.D. candidate (ABD) in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese at the University of Iowa under the direction of Prof. Paula Kempchinsky. During the years 2005-2009, I worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the same department. I am a 2009-2010 recipient of the Ballard-Seashore Dissertation Year Fellowship administered through the Graduate College.

I am currently writing my dissertation, entitled “The syntax-information structure interface: subjects and clausal word order in Galician”. My research interests lie in theoretical syntax, more specifically on the syntax of subjects and left-peripheral constituents, but for my dissertation research I have been making a foray into Experimental Syntax, which attempts to elicit quantitative psycholinguistic grammar judgments from larger numbers of participants. I am also interested in pragmatics and the influence that information packaging may have on word order. Looking toward the future, I have an interest in investigating quantifier raising and scope relations. Languages of particular interest to me currently are Galician, Spanish, European Portuguese, and Catalan, but I have also worked with English, Mandarin Chinese and Korean.

Selected conference presentations:

U-lo suxeito?: A program for determining word order in Galician”. IX International Conference of the International Association of Galician Studies (AIEG), Santiago de Compostela/Vigo/A Coruña (Galicia). 13-17 July 2009. (.ppt link)
