Where can I get information on a Spanish major or minor?

Detailed handouts with information on the major or minor are also available on the first floor of Phillips Hall (PH) or from the main office of the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese, 111 PH. You may also contact the departmental Director of Undergraduate Studies; the main departmental office (335-2244) can tell you this professor's name and office hours.

How do I declare a Spanish or Portuguese major?

To declare any major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (including Spanish or Portuguese) go to CLAS Academic Programs, 120 Schaeffer Hall.

I'm a Spanish major; how do I find out who my advisor is?

Shortly after you declare Spanish as a major, you will receive an e-mail from the department office informing you of who your adviser is.  We also keep a list of advisors and advisees on the bulletin board next to 123 PH. If you can't find your name on that list, talk to Merry Bullock in 111 PH.

How do I declare a Spanish or Portuguese minor?

All students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences may declare or change minors at the Student Records page of their ISIS account; at CLAS Academic Programs & Services; or through an academic advisor.

Do my Spanish GER courses count for a Spanish minor?

Only 3 credits (semester hours) from coursework below 35:103 can count toward a minor.  Of the 15 credits required for the minor, AT LEAST 12 must come from coursework at the 100-level. These 12 credits must be from the University of Iowa; all courses which count for the minor must have been taught in Spanish.

Do my FLIP credits count toward a Spanish major or minor?

They don't count toward a major. Three semester hours of FLIP credits count toward the minor, as the equivalent of credits below the level of 35:103.

Where can I get information on study-abroad programs in Spanish?

You can talk to the departmental study-abroad adviser for the Dept. of Spanish and Portuguese, or go to the Office for Study Abroad (1111 University Capitol Centre, 335-0353) and talk to one of the study abroad advisors there (either with or without an appointment).

Where can I get information on a teaching certificate in Spanish?

To get a secondary teaching certificate in Spanish you must both complete a Spanish major AND be accepted into the Teacher Education Program in Foreign Language in the College of Education. For information, contact the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education.

Is there a program in Spanish-English translation?

No, we do not have a program in translation at either the undergraduate or the graduate level.

Do you have a course in reading Spanish for graduate students from other departments?

No.
