Major Requirements

The major in Spanish requires 36 semester hours (12 courses) at the 100-level.

     Required courses: 12 s.h.

1 course in each of these areas:
        Hispanic linguistics (3 s.h.)
        Spanish peninsular literature (3 s.h.)
        Spanish American literature (3 s.h.)
        culture (peninsular or Spanish American; 3 s.h.)

     Elective courses 24 s.h.

Elective courses of the major may be additional courses in the four areas above, as well as coursework in Spanish language skills, including more advanced language courses which focus on specialized language functions and purposes.  Elective courses may also include up to two courses in Portuguese and/or two courses in related areas from other departments, such as History, Linguistics, or Anthropology.  All elective coursework must be at the 100 level. 

Of the twelve total courses above (four core plus eight elective), at least three must be advanced courses in the 35:170 to 35:198 range. Courses from study abroad programs cannot be used to satisfy this requirement.

Restrictions on elective coursework:

1.  No more than five of the following courses or equivalent transfer or study abroad courses (as determined by the departmental study abroad advisor) may be applied toward the major:

2. No credit from 38:100 (Accelerated Elementary Portuguese) may be applied toward the Spanish major. Of the 5 s.h. earned in 38:101 (Accelerated Intermediate Portuguese), 3 s.h. may be applied toward the Spanish major. No more than 6 s.h. total of coursework in Portuguese (including 38:103 and 38:122) may be applied toward the Spanish major.

3. No more than 6 s.h. from related courses outside the department may be applied toward the Spanish major. Related courses must be approved by the Undergraduate Program Director and must be 100-level courses. A list of currently approved related courses is available from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

4. No more than 6 s.h. in courses taught in English (either in this department or in other departments) may be applied toward the Spanish major.

5. At least 21 semester hours of courses for the major must be University of Iowa credit (including credit earned in study abroad programs for which resident credit is awarded).

Notes and recommendations

Undergraduates may register for graduate courses (those numbered <35:200) only under the following exceptional circumstance: (1) completion of at least 30 s.h. of the major; (2) GPA in the major of at least 3.75; (3) enrollment in the Honors Program; (4) permission of both instructor and department head.

Majors should plan on spending their final semester of study at the Iowa City main campus (i.e., should not plan on participating in a study abroad program during their final semester as an undergraduate).
