An Introduction

As you prepare to begin your journalism career, please consider making a solid investment in yourself and your profession by joining the Society of Professional Journalists. Membership in SPJ is a rewarding experience that puts you at the forefront of industry happenings.

Nearly 300 chapters nationwide and over 6,000 members bring educational programming to local areas and offer regular contact with other professionals. Members have a wide background including print, broadcast and online journalism and trade publications.

The University of Iowa Society of Professional Journalist was officially recognized as a UI student organization on September 22, 1983. Currently, the chapter has over 40 members.

The University of Iowa chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists is the largest and most active SPJ chapter in the state of Iowa. Our chapter provides an opportunity for members to meet, talk and collaborate with professional journalists while networking with their peers.

Our chapter organizes several activities throughout the academic year, including resume workshops, discussions with local media professionals, and various social outings. Our chapter also conducts a yearly fundraiser to help subsidize the cost of member attendance at SPJ National and Regional Conventions.

In October 2001, at the SPJ National Convention in Seattle, our chapter was recognized as the "Outstanding Campus Chapter" for Region 7. (Region 7 included SPJ chapters in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska.) This was the third year in a row our chapter had won this award. In addition, our chapter was named "National Outstanding Chapter of the Year" at the 1999 and 2000 SPJ National Conventions.
