Staff Council Elections: February 9 - 22, 2007
Research

Date: February 8, 2007

The following staff members are running for Staff Council in the Research category:

Joyce Baker - I have represented the University in my previous employment here on the following external committees: Iowa Geographic Information Council;Mid-American Geographic Information Council;I have also served on numerous community committees in my position as Director of Research and Information with the United Way of East Central Iowa while employed there previous to taking my current position, and also represented the employees as the office steward for the IBEW Local #1352;I am committed to diversity and performance improvement through creating a positive work environment.  I also believe strongly in the need to promote the University within the external communities in which it operates.  I am highly creative and dedicated to the utilization of research-based best practices in all arenas.  I am an experienced public speaker and have exceptional leadership qualities that I believe would make me a well-qualified contributor to the goals of the Staff Council.

Diana Boeglin - Diana has 12 years work experience at the UI, including founding/coordinating the former RA Network as well as other committees to serve staff needs.

Robert Brown - I had worked with this individual for over a year before he moved into his present position.  He was very proactive in defining his job duties and expectations.  He seeks change when needed and expands horizons for his coworkers.  If the “status quo” seems out of date he does what he can to make it change.  He has worked in several areas of the university and has great insight on how the system works and how he can communicate to all levels at the university.

Mohammed Filali – I have been a the Ui for the past 7-8 years and have been in many scientific positions as Postdoc associate, research Fellow, Research Investigator and Assistant research scientist. Therefore, I know the system well and beside have been employed in several other prestigious institutions, etc.

Michael Schueller - I have been an employee of the University, at the University Hygienic Laboratory, for 17-plus years in the Limnology Section. I am currently the Section Supervisor and have been for the past 10 years. I have served on several committees, internal and external, over that period of time always with the goal of making a positive contribution to my work environment. I am a service oriented person. I am seeking election to Staff Council to become more involved in roles that will be of service to other staff members and the University as a whole. I also hope to gain a better understanding of University goals, functions, policies and environment through my involvement. Ultimately, I am seeking to make a positive difference in the University culture by becoming involved with a larger group of my peers outside of my specific department.

Kristine Sigsbee – I have worked at the University of Iowa since the summer of 2002, first as a Postdoctoral Research Scholar, and then as an Assistant Research Scientist.  I have a personal understanding of how difficult it can be for a new researcher to become an established scientist.  I also have first-hand knowledge of how hard it can be to secure funding in a highly competitive field, especially when our primary funding sources are affected by political forces beyond our control. Researchers at the University of Iowa may work in many different fields and come from diverse backgrounds, but we all face many of the same challenges.  As a member of the University of Iowa Staff Council, I will work hard to ensure that the University of Iowa community gains a better appreciation of the unique problems faced by research staff members and acknowledges the contributions we make to this institution.
