A message from Staff Council President Duncan Stewart

Dear Colleagues:
I became your new Staff Council president on April 1 and I want to introduce myself. My name is Duncan Stewart and I work as a catalog librarian at the University of Iowa Libraries. I am serving my second term on Staff Council and have been at the Libraries for six years.

I grew up in Iowa City, graduated from West High School, and earned my B.A. in History at Iowa. I also hold an M.A. in Slavics and a Masters in Library Science. My wife Rachel is the webmaster for the Tippie College of Business, and we have two children in the Iowa City schools.

As Professional and Scientific or Merit Supervisory Exempt/Confidential staff, we are the largest employee group on campus. With 54 other Staff Council members, I represent you and our 5,500 co-workers at Iowa. Staff Council is a forum to advise the University, advocate for our constituents, and a way for the University to communicate with us.

Staff Council is also a vital part of campus leadership. Our Executive Board meets regularly with President Mason, the Provost, and other university officers. We work with Faculty Senate, and Student Government to devise unified responses to issues that affect the entire university.

Staff Council strives to be your voice, but to be successful we must hear from you. Communication from P&S and MSC/E staff will be especially crucial in the coming year, as changes in the compensation/classification system for P&S, and benefit models for all of us are proposed.
