- Promote University relations within the community of Iowa City and the State of Iowa
- Collaborate with shared governance organizations on campus, notably the Faculty Senate, Student Government and organizational shared governance groups
- Promote staff learning through professional development and awards
- Promote communication and shared governance among staff, central administration, Faculty Senate and Student Government
Staff Events
UI Staff Councilors had a rocking good time at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County Bowl for Kids’ Sake while raising money to support local kids and their mentors.
The “Councilors for a Cause” team raised over $1,700 and celebrated its efforts with some bowling at the “Pop, Rock and Bowl”-themed event on Feb. 24 at Colonial Lanes. A total of $150,000 was raised by the 176 teams that took part in this year’s event. According to Big Brothers Big Sisters, all of the money raised stays in Johnson County to help match adults with kids ages 6 to 18, giving them a mentor to talk to and spend time with. Team Captain and UISC Social Committee Chair John Downing said the council was thrilled to support such a worthwhile cause and take part in a fun event. He thanked all UI colleagues and others who donated to this worthwhile cause.

The University of Iowa Staff Council began in 1967 as the result of efforts by Don Volm, then the Assistant Director of Personnel Services and jean Kendall, recently retired Director of IMU. The Council represented all Professional and Scientific and Merit staff and was mostly concerned with personnel issues. In 1973, the Council became the primary advocate for policy changes and charter committee appointments.
In mid 1970, the Iowa Public Employment Relations Act was passed and subsequently AFSCME gained the exclusive right to represent employees when voted to bargain collectively. Bargaining was set up on a state wide basis. The first unit to choose to bargain was the blue collar staff, security next, then technical, and finally in the early 80s, the clerical staff. In 1998, Health Care staff elected to have SEIU as their bargaining agent. As each group began to bargain, those representatives had to leave Staff Council so as not to interfere with AFSCMEs or SEIUs right to act as their exclusive representative...Read More
