Harmful Effects
If someone drinks too much, they pay the price, right? Wrong --- High risk drinking affects everyone. Research and common sense indicate that high risk drinkers don't only hurt themselves - high risk drinking "spills-over" and hurts other people, too.
- 65% of UI students report they've had their sleep or study interrupted by others drinking.
- 38% of UI students have been insulted or humilated by someone who has been drinking.
- 71% OF UI students have had to baby-sit a drunken student
High-risk drinkers disrupt studying and sleep, damage property, cause fights, and put us at risk by driving after drinking. While people 21 and over have a "right" to drink, they also have a responsibility to do it safely so they don't harm themselves or someone else.
The majority of people, including most college students, balance these rights and responsibilities and are able to drink safely when they choose. However, those that do not or cannot drink in a safe and responsible manner cause significant problems for the rest of us. An increasing number of college students, administrators, and community members are saying the same thing:
"We all have a right to a safe and healthy community environment"
...that's what Stepping Up is working to create.
