Getting Involved
Want to be involved? Stepping Up is a campus-community effort, if you're interested in getting involved, there are lots of easy ways to help create a healthier community for everyone.
Students...
- Look for ways to have fun and socialize that aren't alcohol-centered.
- Drink in a lower-risk manner.
- Use a designated driver who hasn't been drinking. Designated drivers save lives and court costs!
- Respect the choices of those who drink responsibly and those who choose not to drink.
- Expect more from your friends who decide to drink. Don't let another person's idea of fun interfere with your right to sleep, study, and live in a safe, healthy environment.
- Join the Stepping Up Student Group to stay informed about the campus culture, voice your opinions and concerns, and plan events and activities. Email us to get involved stepping@uiowa.edu.
Parents...
- Talk to your son or daughter about alcohol and the situations they are likely to encounter in college.
- Be clear with your child about your expectations.
- Model lower risk, responsible alcohol use if you drink.
- Support efforts to decrease underage drinking and to provide fun, safe alternative activities for teenagers and young adults.
Retailers...
- Train your employees not to serve or sell alcoholic beverages to underage or obviously intoxicated persons.
- Train your employees to ask for IDs and recognize fake IDs.
- Join your fellow retailers in stopping advertising and drink specials that encourage dangerous alcohol consumption.
Community...
- Let your neighbors and the City Council know that you support efforts to decrease underage and high-risk drinking.
- Support local businesses that offer an alternative to the bars.
