Undergraduate Scholarships
Following is a list of scholarships available for undergraduate theatre students. Please note that scholarship amounts vary from year to year. To apply, print out an application form (requires Adobe Acrobat) indicating all scholarships for which you would like to be considered. Please include the following:
- Cover letter highlighting qualifications
- Resume of all pertinent information, including production experience
- Most updated transcript, including a statement of GPA in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and in the major. This is obtainable, for a small fee, from the Registrar's Office, 1 Jessup Hall

Scholarships for Incoming First Year Students
Iowa Center for the Arts Scholarship
- Based on artistic potential in one or more areas of the theatre, as well as academic and artistic achievement.
- Award: Full in-state tuition.

Hatch-Billops Scholarship for Students of African or Caribbean Descent
Theatre Arts Scholarship for Potential in One or More Areas of the Theatre
Scholarships for students who will have completed a minimum of 30 semester hours by the end of the spring term
Iowa Center for the Arts Scholarship
- Based on good academic standing, demonstrated talent in any area, and contribution to the theatre program as a whole
- Award: Anticipated amount $5,000
Alumni Scholarship
- Based on demonstrated talent in any production area, good academic standing, and contribution towards theatre as a whole
- Award: Full in-state tuition
Dorothy Guthrie Scholarship
- Based on demonstrated talent in any production area, good academic standing, and contribution to the theatre program as a whole
- Award: $5,000
Tennessee Williams Scholarship
- Based on academic merit, contribution to the theatre program as a whole, and financial need (Please provide some indication of the reason for your financial need)
- Award: $3,000
Bach Scholarship
- For a student whose consideration and thoughtfulness help to create a strong artistic community, and based on good academic standing.
- Award: $1,200
Hatch-Billops University of Iowa Theatre Arts Scholarship
- Open to students of African American or Caribbean descent with preference for a descendent of the Middle Passage who was born in the United States or Caribbean.
- The recipient must have a demonstrated commitment to theatre and the University of Iowa’s Theatre Arts Department.
- Have demonstrated talent and ambition in the classroom and in one or more areas of production, and have expressed a desire to graduate from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in Theatre Arts.
- Minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average required of all university classes.
- Award: $1,500
Vivian McCarty Scholarship
- Based on financial need, academic merit, and contribution to the department.
- Award: $600
Scholarships for students who will have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours by the end of the spring term
E.C. Mabie Scholarship
- Based on expectation of recipient making a major contribution in some area of theatre
- Award: Full in-state tuition.
Brian Byrnes Physical Performance Scholarship
- This scholarship supports students who have a strong sense of physical performance as actors or directors.
- Based on good academic standing (minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average required of all university classes).
- Awarded to an undergraduate student who demonstrates talent in the art of physical performance, and who is a supportive contributor within an ensemble.
- A recommendation will be shared with the grantor of the scholarship prior to final selection.
- Award: $1,000
Dina Reese Evans Scholarship
- Based on outstanding contributions to the productions of the department.
- Award: $1,000
Scholarships for students in design, technical theatre and stage management
Arnie Gillette Scholarship
- Based on demonstrated talent in design, technical theatre, or stage management, good academic standing, and contribution to the theatre program as a whole
- Award: $1,300
Barbara Clymer Hubbard Fund in Theatre Arts
- Based on need and merit to deserving undergraduate or graduate students in design.
- Award: $4,000
Interdisciplinary Scholarships
Instructions: Please note that each of the scholarships listed below has different application procedures. Read carefully and submit all pertinent application materials.
Marcia Thayer Scholarship
- Open to undergraduate students majoring in dance, music or theatre arts who demonstrate ability in more than one performance area.
- Award: Full in-state or out-of-state tuition, fees and books
- Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their experience in at least two areas of the arts; a resume including all production and/or concert experience; an up-to-date transcript, including a statement of GPA in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and in your major; a letter of recommendation from at least one faculty member or other qualified person, in each of your artistic disciplines.

Nicholas Meyer Scholarship in Dramatic Writing
- Open to any registered undergraduate University of Iowa student to encourage the study of dramatic writing for the stage, television, and film.
- Award: $3,500
Applicants should submit a copy of most recent transcript, a letter summarizing experience and ambition in playwriting or screenwriting and related fields, and several samples of writing including a complete transcript. Total sample should not exceed 150 pages and may be as little as 35 pages.

Richard Maibaum Scholarship in Playwriting
- Open to any registered graduate or undergraduate University of Iowa student whose stage, film, or television play has been judged to be the work or a writer of promise and originality.
- Special attention will be given to works whose subject matter reflects Richard Maibaum's lifelong concern for social issues such as social conflict, injustice, and prejudice.
- Award: $1,000
- Applicants should submit a typewritten manuscript, a current resume, and a copy of their most recent University of Iowa transcript to Art Borreca, The University of Iowa, 107 Theatre Building, Iowa City, IA 52242-1705.
