The New York Theatre Experience
The New York Theatre Experience is a 3-semester hour course in which both undergraduates and graduate students live in New York City for two weeks in January. Together with a faculty member they see and discuss professional productions and other cultural activities.
Classes
The course includes eight two-hour class sessions. Two take place in Iowa prior to the trip, and provide basic information and orientation. Six are held in New York to discuss and critique activities and discoveries. The teacher facilitates a discussion among the various groups of students, and points out large themes and issues.
Performances
Students see between nine and eleven New York productions, opera, Broadway, Off-Broadway, and experimental theatre. They also see several exhibits at museums. Days are full, as students spend six to eight hours in an activity directly related to the purpose of the class. These activities are oriented toward actors, directors, playwrights, and designers as well as those interested in the business aspects of New York theatre. Students keep a daily journal and write a paper with a major on-site research component.
Dates
Dates of the course this year are January 3-12, 2008.
